Mental illnesses like mania may be due to overactivity of cetain brain chemicals and we think that lithium may work by blocking these. We are testing these ideas using a scanner that can measure brain function. Volunteers are given a dose of methamphetamine to create effects similar to mania, followed by a course of either lithium or dummy 'sugar pills'.

Some researchers believe that lithium increases the amount of grey matter in the human brain and that this can be seen on magnetic resonance pictures. We think that something else is going on.

Lithium has been used to treat various illness for over a century. Despite all this experience, little is known about how much of lithium enters the brain after it is taken. We have developed a way of measuring the amount using our scanner.
