The overarching aim of our research is to better understand the effects of lithium on the brain so that it might reach its full potential in the treatment of people with bipolar disorder.
We believe that lithium is an effective and appropriate treatment for a number of mental illnesses. In bipolar disorder, a good response is seen in about a third of cases but an equal proportion do poorly with lithium. With our current research program, funded by the major research councils and charitable bodies, we are trying to understand why this is the case.
